First heart transplant

The first heart transplant was made in 1967 by a South African surgeon Dr. Christiaan Bernard. The heart transplant was a big success but the patient died due to some complications.

The surgeon has prepared the heart surgery after performing numerous experiments on dogs. He has a 30 member surgical team which was involved in implanting the heart of a young woman into 53-year-old Louis Washkansky, a Cape Town grocer suffering from diabetes and incurable heart disease. Washkansky received the heart of Denise Darvall, a 25-year-old bank clerk who was left brain-dead following an automobile accident the day before. She was removed from life support, and her father gave permission for her heart to be given to Washkansky.Click here to get powerpoint templates on heart.

The surgery was performed at Cape Town's Groote Schuur Hospital. Washkansky's body did not reject the heart, due in large part to the immunosuppressive drugs he received. But those drugs also weakened his immune system, and he contracted double pneumonia, which killed him 18 days after the transplant.
Since then Dr Barnard has become an international celebrity. He has performed various heart transplant surgeries and most of them are successful and are improving with the time.

What are the Risks involved after heart transplant?

Although heart transplant surgery is a life-saving measure, it has many risks involved. Risks of heart transplant are as follows:-

·         Failure of the donor heart
·         Sensitivity to Infection
·         Cancer
·         Medication side effects
·         Problems with your arteries

Careful monitoring, treatment, and regular medical care can prevent or help manage some of these risks.
